Spatial design creates three-dimensional advertisements.
I’ve always been fond of advertising and design since my student days. After starting my career in advertising sales, I happened to come across a beautifully designed building in a magazine. It was KOGEISHA’s headquarters, which had just been completed at the time. That’s when I realized, “Ah, this is what three- dimensional advertising is.” I made the decision right away to change jobs. In my daily work, I focus on acquiring new clients as well as expanding existing client relationships. In detail, I plan and manage production related to communication through spatial design, which involves creating various experiences and interactions in the space to help clients achieve their goals for that location.By leveraging creative ideas, we design spaces that contribute to the fulfillment of these objectives. For example, I listen to our clients’ current issues and challenges, share the direction for their projects, and make suggestions on how to overcome their obstacles.while aiming to create better outcomes. From strategic planning and layout design to on- site operations, we manage everything. We handle not only specific spatial design tasks or exhibition booth planning but also often take charge of organizing entire events and exhibitions, including overseeing the construction process and recruiting exhibitors. Our work covers a wide range of tasks. We sometimes allocate more than one person on large projects, but usually a single sales staff handles everything from start to finish for each client. We believe this one - on - one approach allows us to sync better with our clients’ passion and vision.
No Two Projects Are Alike – Always Innovating
Every project feels like a new challenge. As for the nature of this work, there are no two projects that are ever the same. Even with the same client, brand, or product, the strategies and conditions change every time. While there are plenty of techniques and methodologies based on experience and knowledge, there’s no guaranteed formula for success. Just because something worked well last time doesn’t mean it will this time. Fresh ideas are always required, and we need innovative approaches and ingenuity.
Of course, creating something entirely new is difficult, but being able to take on these challenges within various constraints is what makes this profession exciting. This environment where I can create new things in collaboration with clients is something I am deeply grateful for. In some cases, we have to start from nothing. However, this provides limitless possibilities to how we approach the project. We can always take on new challenges in spatial design and bring to life the world we envision through the work. It’s rewarding to tackle challenges given by clients, develop a clear direction, and work with designers to shape their vision into reality. The responsibility is significant, but so is the sense of fulfillment.
The Process Matters Just as Much as the Results
Fortunately, we have many long-term clients. While results are essential, we also place great importance on the process that leads to those results. We work closely with our clients to solve challenges and overcome obstacles together. We believe this reciprocative approach is one of the reasons our clients value us. By having one person handle all aspects of a project, we can better align with the client’s vision and maintain the passion throughout the process, which distinguishes us from others.
About 10 years ago, I worked on a three-and-a-half-year-long project for a lens manufacturer. The project involved organizing several solo exhibitions and showcases, where I was the main representative for the first time.I handled everything, from attracting attendees at major city hotels to overseeing the staging of displays, presentations, and even the finer details of event management. It was a large- scale project, and the wide range of responsibilities made it a truly memorable experience. It was a project that made me realize the depth and intricacies of creating spatial designs. Another long - term project I’ve handled is for the “FOOMA” food machinery exhibition, where I’ve managed the overall construction for more than 10 years. Every year, we receive a great turnout, and while it’s always successful, we continually make small improvements and adjustments. Every project brings new discoveries and insights, and we are never content without improving. The moment a project succeeds, it becomes part of the past.Complacency prevents growth.
